Spring King of the Lake

2017 Spring KOTL Event Information (Update available below)

Spring KOTL Event: Saturday April 29th & Sunday 30th

Location: St. Catharine’s Ontario

Port: St. Catharine’s Marina; Port Weller

We start the year with our longest running and most participated in event: Spring King of The Lake Tournament.

Kings and cohos can be in 10 ft. or 300 foot, or both at the same time. Spring fishing can mean grinding in the top 20 feet for any coho or king willing to bite or it can be an all out slug fest with kings and coho’s coming from top to bottom-shallow to deep. The spring KOTL is always an interesting and unpredictable event.  By moving it back one week, we hope to see warmer and more stable water which should set the scene for a great event in St. Catharine's Ontario!

In 2017, those teams that want to challenge themselves can also fish the June King of Kings event. This year, the King of Kings is also part of the FishUSA overall championship! However, those teams that fared well in these first two qualifying events will need to come back to St. Catharine's to compete in the fall event also and prove they are good enough in all of events, using different tactics, skill and presentation to be named as the: FishUSA “Overall Champion” Are you worthy of this challenge? The FishUSA overall winners will also receive a large novelty cheque and team plaques.

The spring event usually finds a high level of excitement, testosterone and competition. The best of the best anglers converge on St. Catharine’s in the spring to fish this tournament and to show their peers that they are the best at this often unpredictable salmon fishery!  Now, they can fulfill that desire with a spring, summer and fall event at the western end of Lake Ontario. Will this be you this year?

Welcome to the 2017 Spring King of the Lake

The entries are in and we are looking at another great spring tournament. The captain's meeting will be held at the St. Catharine's Marina on the back deck with registration beginning at 5:00 pm and the meeting starting promptly at 6:00pm. The captain's meeting will be BYOB. Food and drinks will be sold during the meeting. An e-mail will be sent out to all captain's a few days prior to the event with more information. Please check below to make sure we received your registration and good luck to all of the 2017 teams!

2016 Spring KOTL Summary

The north east winds continued on Lake O., right into this year’s event.  Despite a favorable forecast leading into this year’s event, we were given strong north east winds on day one and Friday’s event was cancelled after the initial postponement.  It was a good call by the Tournament Committee as strong north east winds started at 7am and continued into the afternoon.
Many teams were scratching their heads the morning of day two, should we go left? right? Or straight? Those that made a good call and sat on them took advantage of the early bite with most kings caught within those first two hours. It turned into a grind for the majority and the score board reflected it.
In the end, it was Team Navigator that came to the scales with 5 good kings and a total weight of 87.30 pounds and a final score of (137.30). He also took big fish honors with a 22.04 pound King he caught late in the day. He was closely followed by the other top 7 teams: Yankee Troller (132.15), Thrillseeker (131.43), Bay Rat (125.42), Big Cat (118.60), Mid River Marina ( 117.09) and  Peche Extreme (112.50).
Congratulations to all of this year’s check winners and to local charter captain; Aldo Nava on a big win.

FishUSA Overall Championship:
Team Thrillseeker takes the early lead in this year’s FishUSA overall championship followed by Teams Big Cat and Mid River Marina.

2015 Spring KOTL Summary

The event kicked off Friday with our traditional Big Fish Friday. The change for this year was to allow teams to weigh “2” salmon in lieu of the past which allowed just “1”. Congratulations to our top 3!!

2015 BIG FISH FRIDAY RESULTS
1 Team Silver Junkies 40.77
2 Team Myles Ahead 38.20
3 Team Big Cat 37.97

The weekend’s event went off without a hitch: the lake was calm, the sun came out and the fish cooperated quite well for most teams. All of the teams agreed that we could have all done without the bugs but as one knowledgeable Canadian angler said, “when we have bugs, we have KINGS” and that we did!

Anglers beat the skinny water at the traditional spring locations, fished the drop or deeper water at the River and fished everywhere in-between. Fishing was hot and cool for teams and that changed from day to day. It kept it interesting for most and that was witnessed at the day 2 weigh in.

Team Get it Wet was our Day one leader with 87.97 pounds but found out that being in first after day one does not guarantee a win in a two day event. At the weigh in, we had several lead changes with Thrillseeker and Outtaline making a hard push at the end with good boxes. Close to the end, Team Vision Quest held the lead with their 80.57 day 2 box with 3 teams left to weigh. This set the stage for an exciting finish as there were three teams left to weigh. After Mid River Marina weighed (Day one’s 3rd place team), their day 2 box was not as big and Team VQ held on a bit longer. Then Lord of The Kings (Day one’s second place team) walked up to the scales and weighed a 78.76 box, good enough to edge out 1st place from Vision Quest. It was not over just yet… Next and final, all eyes were on Team Get it Wet’s cooler as they strolled up to the scales to weigh. They needed about 78 pounds to finish the deal and claim the win but they fell short with a 73.58 box, good enough for 4th place overall but not the SPRING 2015 KOTL Title.
